A musty smell when the system runs

Do any of these sound familiar?
Mold in the ductwork is easy to miss, and every time the system runs it can push spores and a musty smell through the whole home. These are the things St. Louis homeowners most often notice before they call us in to take a look.
A stale, musty or earthy odor that is strongest when the heating or air conditioning first kicks in and pushes air through the ducts.
Dark spots, fuzzy patches or discoloration on or around your supply vents, registers and grilles is a classic sign of mold in the ductwork.
Sneezing, congestion, itchy eyes or breathing that feels better once you are out of the house can point to something circulating in your air.
Rooms that feel clammy, condensation on vents, or a home that struggles to stay dry all create the moisture that mold needs to grow.
A leak, flood or burst pipe near your HVAC system or ductwork can leave behind the damp conditions where mold quietly takes hold.
Real results
We photograph your ducts before and after on every job, so you can see exactly what came out instead of taking our word for it.

Our process
A careful, honest approach that deals with the mold you have now and the moisture that caused it, with the price agreed before we pick up a tool.
We inspect your ductwork and air handler, confirm it really is mold, and trace the damp that is feeding it. You get a clear, upfront price before any work begins.
Our NADCA and VSMR-certified technicians clear the ducts with negative-pressure source removal, clean the coil, drip pan and blower where damp and mold collect, then apply an EPA-approved treatment.
Because mold needs moisture, we help you tackle the cause, and can fit an in-duct UV light, add a Virucide sanitizing treatment, or advise on humidity and filter changes to keep the system clear.
Keep it from coming back
Treating the mold you can see today is only half the job. Mold grows wherever there is moisture, so the real fix is keeping the inside of your system dry and inhospitable.
We start by clearing the damp that caused it, whether that is a leaking drip pan, high humidity or a clogged filter. After treatment, an optional in-duct UV light installed near the coil runs quietly in the background and helps stop mold and microbial growth taking hold again between cleanings. We only suggest it if your home is a good fit, and many homeowners also add an air duct sanitizing and Virucide treatment for extra peace of mind.

Good to know
Mold in your HVAC system can create a musty smell and, for people who are sensitive, may aggravate allergy or asthma symptoms as the air circulates. We are duct specialists, not doctors, so if anyone in your home is unwell we would always suggest speaking to a medical professional. What we can do is inspect your system, treat the mold we find, and help stop it coming back.
We clean and treat the affected ductwork, but mold needs moisture to grow, so if the underlying damp or humidity is left unaddressed it can return. That is why we look for the source, help you tackle it, and can fit an in-duct UV light or add a sanitizing treatment. We will not promise it can never come back, but we do everything we can to keep it away.
Almost always moisture. Common causes include high humidity, condensation on cool ductwork, leaks or recent water damage, poor drainage around the system, or an air conditioner that is oversized for the home. Finding and reducing that moisture is the key to keeping ducts clear.
An in-duct UV light installed near the coil can help limit mold and microbial growth inside the system between cleanings, and it runs quietly in the background. It is optional and works best alongside fixing any moisture problem, so we will only suggest it if your home is a good fit. You can read more on our UV light installation page.
Our technicians clear the ductwork with negative-pressure source-removal equipment, clean the coil, drip pan and blower where moisture and mold collect, then apply an EPA-approved treatment to the system. Where it helps we can add a Virucide sanitizing treatment or fit an in-duct UV light. Everything is priced upfront and documented with before-and-after photos of your own system.
It can. When mold and buildup coat the coil and the inside of the ducts, your system has to work harder to move air, which can reduce efficiency and comfort. Cleaning and treating the system helps restore proper airflow.
